Sheet Music (My thoughts on the book)

BOOK: Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage
AUTHOR: Dr. Kevin Leman

SUMMARY:

This book was written by a Christian, so he un-apologetically explains why issues like pornography is not only harmful to a marriage, but is also a sin.
But what I LOVED about this book is that it’s MORE than what you ‘shouldn’t do’ in marriage. It’s an HONEST (“Some of what you’ll read in the book may be too blunt or straightforward for your personal taste.”) approach to what we SHOULD be embracing within a healthy and loving marriage.

Dr. Leman is very honest with:
* how many areas of a man’s life can be negatively affected when he feels unsatisfied sexually.
* how a woman needs to feel loved, valued and adored (emotional intimacy) in order for her to sincerely be interested in physical intimacy.
* God’s perfect design for marriage.
* lots of practical, creative tips and ideas challenges.

YOU’LL LOVE THIS BOOK IF…

I believe anyone who is already in a healthy marriage (based on love, respect and service towards one another) could gain a lot of new insight as to how their partner may view intimacy.

It also has the potential to guide married couples towards practices that encourage deep conversations, honesty, transparency and an open mind to discover a new level of intimacy and understanding.

QUICK FACTS:
Faith-based? Yes
Easy read? Yes
Age group? Anyone engaged or married

J/K! 🙂
But it WAS an interesting book to tackle in the kid’s carpool line!

QUOTES:

  • “I have been speaking and writing for years about how the over-committed pace of American families is killing us socially, relationally, and psychologically. We are simply too busy. Many families I work with could easily cut out 50 percent of their activities and still be tired. That’s not an exaggeration. Most families who see me are often shocked at the way I can take a meat cleaver to their schedule.
When we live at the pace of a NASCAR race, sex is one of the first things that goes. Once again, if you want to improve your sex life as a couple, you need to examine your relationship outside the bedroom. What are you doing that is keeping you from sexual intimacy?”
  • “If you don’t treat sex {as one of the most important parts of your life}- as a matter of supreme importance- you’re shortchanging yourself, your spouse, and your kids.”
  • “If you truly want to make your family live and your sexual life more meaningful, you’re going to have to give up a few things. No more running around five out of five weekday evenings.”
  • “One woman wrote on a survey, “I wish my husband and I had invested more time and money in our love relationship. The divorce was much more expensive- and must more traumatic for the children than occasional weekends away would have been!” …as a married couple, you simply must get away.”
  • “I’ve become convinced that this wonderful gift of sex makes everything nicer. A couple’s sex life is usually a microcosm of the marriage.”
  • “What she doesn’t realize is that sex represents many different things to a man. A number of them are emotional and spiritual, having nothing to do with the physical.”
  • “When a relationship goes bad, or simply cools off, it’s only a matter of time until the sexual fervor follows suit. When a husband gets too involved in work, or when a wife starts ignoring her marriage because she is enamored with her children, eventually sexual interest will wane. The relationship is dying, and sex is often a barometer of that death.”
  • “For most men, the greatest enemy of sex is a lack of imagination on the part of their wives. If a man doesn’t feel pursued or wanted or if his wife is unable or unwilling to communicate how much she enjoys being with him and how much she wants his body, hubby loses interest. Your husband wants to be needed and wanted and prized.”
  • “One of the most loving and holy things you can do in marriage is to provide sexually fulfilling pursuit of your husband or wife.”
  • “You’ve got to stop viewing sex through your perception alone and start viewing it through your spouse’s eyes.”
  • “You can be the best cook, a great mother, and a fantastic conversationalist, but if you put no thought or effort into your lovemaking, your husband will probably feel disappointed. Conversely, if you give your husband a thrilling sex life, you might be surprised at how little he cares about other things that go wanting.”
  • “…sex for a woman involves words and emotions, and other things besides physical groping.”
  • “For {women}, problems erase sex; sex doesn’t erase problems. If a wife is upset at her husband, she may shut down sexually. If she’s worried that there won’t be enough money to pay the mortgage in three days, she may lose all sexual desire. If you’re having difficulty {__ __}, look at the entire relationship, and then look at your whole life. Are other issues keeping you distracted?”
  • “Most men need to “dial it back” a little bit. By that I mean stop expecting your wife to meet your sexual needs perfectly. Settle for improvement. The perfect sex life you have in your mind probably doesn’t exist; it’s far more helpful to work toward something that’s better than to fight over an ideal two people will probably never achieve.”
  • “Keep reminding yourself of this: “God made my husband that way.” God thinks it’s important that your husband be chemically drawn to you and motivated to get physically close to you on a regular and consistent basis.” “
  • “…our Creator must have felt you could handle this power since he designed men and women this way. If God were to measure your kindness and generosity solely by how well you treat your husband in this area, what do you think he would say?”
  • “Footnote to every parent: What are you communicating to your sons and daughters about sex? I hope it’s not that sex is bad, because, quite frankly, the day will come when your kids discover otherwise.” You’ll have put yourself in a very bad place because from that day on, your kids will think, Mom and Dad don’t have a clue!
Dinner questions! (When I read this a few months ago,
I added my personal LEAST favorite: “conspiracy theories”!)

Ruthie… 7 years old

Is it just ME or is it a challenge to REMEMBER,PLAN,SCHEDULE, BRIBE,FIND THE RIGHT OUTFIT,CHOOSE THE BEST LOCATIONget’ good photos of your child each year?

Yes, there’s certainly challenges; but, there’s not much that warms my heart more than looking back at meaningful photos of my child from each year.

Birthdays are a great milestone for scheduling photos! It’s easy to remember each year and a fun way to document the child’s personality.

A few weeks before Ruthie’s birthday this year, I gave her three choices. (I learned a LONG time ago with my other ‘strong-willed child’ that, if I wanted success, I must offer choices!)

“Ruthie? Do you want your photos to be…?”
* fun, bright, downtown Bentonville, ice-cream, fountain
* sunset, field, dreamy
* real-life, pajamas, Rusty, swim, HOME

Guess what MY girl choose?!?!?
YES! “REAL-LIFE!”

Ruthie & Rusty
My spaghetti-lovin’ girl!
Her favorite birthday gift!
Personalized Milestone-Memories are my favorite!
Gotta’ love that tongue!
Rayna always needs “just a bite.”
Don’t worry… Ruthie does most of the work!
Missing tooth!

Guess what?!?! You aren’t allowed to over-think or plan outfits, locations or poses!

Colorado Springs (Quick-Trip TIPS!)

TOP Summer Memory!

Let’s be totally honest…
Matthew LOOKS for reasons to visit Colorado. Recently, although there were plenty of available cars nearby for him to choose from, the specific one he wanted just happened to be sitting in his favorite state. Hmmmm…

With only a few days of summer remaining, I was not surprised, but OVER-THE-TOP-EXCITED when he suggested we jump in the car and explore Colorado a few days!

We only had two days before he had work appointments, so we stopped in to see his cousin… who happens to be an AMAZING photographer… who happens to live on a beautiful piece of Colorado property… who happened to be willing to take a photograph of us in her backyard before we said goodbye. (What a BLESSING, right?!?!)

Thank you, Laura!

Since we had NO idea where we were actually staying or doing, we also checked-off #308 on our “Sand Bucket List”! During our drive, we voted and decide to skip a hotel and try a basement unit on VRBO. (Great choice!)

Once we got settled-in to our little living quarters, Matthew realized we were less than an hour away from WHITE WATER RAFTING! (Go ahead and check #313 off that list of things to do with your kids before they move-out!)

I’m LOVING this book!

Disclaimer: When we booked our white water rafting trip, it was MAINLY for me and Matthew! (No shame there.) With that being said, I would not feel comfortable recommending it to parents with ‘young’ (or not tough) (or not water-loving) (or sensitive) (or nervous) kids.
Ruthie was a TROOPER, but the water levels were higher than they’ve been in 50 years! So, the currents were REALLY strong in certain areas. (During many rapids, she was instructed to LAY DOWN where she wasn’t thrown from the raft. The water was ICE-COLD. So, much of Ruthie’s experience was being tossed around… hearing our guide yell at us… feeling like we’re about to flip… then having gallons and gallons of ice-cold water dumped all over her body.) She didn’t cry once and smiled the majority of the trip, but I would only carry super-tough kiddies or your trip will be ruined.

With that being said, white water rafting was, quite-possibly, the HIGHLIGHT of my ENTIRE summer!

Look at Ruthie’s face as she sees the rapid ahead!
What a view!

Other Colorado Springs highlights were:

Just a few of my favorite snap-shots
Downtown Colorado Springs
Garden of the Gods
We had to keep our Friday-Night-Pizza tradition going!

Thanks for stopping by!
I can’t wait to share a few more summer memories soon!

a LINEAGE of GRACE (My thoughts on the book)

BOOK: a LINEAGE of GRACE
AUTHOR: Francine Rivers

SUMMARY:
This is a historical-fiction that tells the story of five pivotal women in the Bible. Not only does this book give us a BEAUTIFUL story of HOPE (Tamar), FAITH (Rahab), LOVE (Ruth), GRACE (Bathsheba) and OBEDIENCE (Mary), it shows how each woman part of the bloodline of Jesus Christ himself!
What an incredible reminder of how God will use our brokenness, sin, fear and doubt to change history!

YOU’LL LOVE THIS BOOK IF…

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone!

* If you’ve never read through the Bible, this book would be GREAT to gain knowledge of these important women and how God used them. (Also, how He can use anyone!)

* If you HAVE read through the Bible, it will CERTAINLY help you put many pieces together and help you remember these women in a more deep and intimate way. (I love reading through the Bible, but THIS historical-fiction opened up my heart to new feelings, thoughts and revelations I’d never considered before!)

* Even if you don’t believe the Bible, I still believe you’ll enjoy the story of these women.

QUICK-FACTS:
Faith-based? YES!
Easy read? Enjoyable, but a VERY big book!
Age group? Anyone would enjoy, but children/teens might not understand a lot of the older practices the women had to endure

PERSONAL TAKE-AWAY:

Like any historical-fiction, the author must take liberties with the the details of each woman’s life. However, I really appreciated how Francine Rivers:
* reminds the reader that much of the story is only an interpretation
* encourages the reader to pray, seek and search the BIBLE for truth
* includes direct, Biblical quotes and historical facts (“I have attempted to remain true to the scriptural message in all points, adding only what is necessary to aid in our understanding of that message.”)
* offers a Biblical study guide at the end of each section (book within the book) which allows you to dive deeper into God’s word

It’s hard for me to read fiction over Christian/self-help (because I feel like there’s so much about me I need to ‘fix’ first), but I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVED this book!

I naturally lean towards feelings and emotions. So I really loved taking the time to understand what these women must have gone through. Sitting in their story gave me so much compassion and a deeper understanding about God’s love.

It sounds crazy, but, for the first time, I actually started looking forward to meeting these REMARKABLE women in Heaven one day!

QUOTES:

  • “Rahab looked out a the plains of Jericho, where thousands of campfires flickered beneath the starry night. Jobab came and stood beside her. “What is that sound?”
    “Singing.”
“They’re celebrating as though they’re already victorious.” “
  • “Ah, yes, Ruth, her precious Ruth. Naomi smiled, lifting Obed to her shoulder and rubbing his back, delighting in the way the baby nuzzled against her neck and melted against her. She couldn’t remember a happier time in her life than now, with this child in her arms. God had stripped her bare and now was rebuilding her house on a firm foundation. This child who had been born to replace her sons and husband would be brought up by Boaz, a man of faith, who studied the Law with diligence and passion, a man who sat in the city gate and ruled his people with wisdom and loving-kindness.”
  • “She lived in constant fear, for she had no possessions of her own, no money to buy sacrifices. All she had to offer God was a contrite heart and the desire to do right for the rest of her life.”
  • “If she said yes, she would become the mother of the long-awaited Messiah. Why the Lord had chosen her to be part of his plan she couldn’t even guess. She was uneducated, poor, and lived in an obscure village that most Jews disdained. Yet she also knew from listening to Scripture readings in the synagogue that God often used the most unlikely and unworthy to fulfill his purposes. It didn’t matter who she was. God would accomplish his purposes in his way. The angel of the Lord was asking her to be part of God’s plan. And everything within her heart and soul cried out a joyous yes.”
  • “As they walked away together, Mary looked back in sorrow as two men she didn’t know carried her son to a borrowed tomb.”

Renovation: Before & After!

Matthew sees potential.
I see work.

Matthew says, “Let’s make it our own!”
I say, “Too many expensive choices.”

Matthew smiles as the dust reveals transformation.
I look at a destroyed house, feel overwhelmed and head back to the apartment (where I decide I wanted to live forever and ever).

All the work we’ve put into our ‘new’ (1970’s) house has felt like a roller-coaster. (The kind of coaster that make you super-sick. Not the kind where everyone hops off smiling and high-fiving one another.)

It certainly felt longer, but after only 5-weeks, we’re officially FINISHED!

Here’s a few BEFORE & AFTER photos:

I LOVE the step-up dining room!
Taking down the beams and updating the floor opened-up the living room!
I’ll post this week on the GAL who made our house feel like “home.”
(Spoiler-alert, it’s sooo-NOT me!)
This is my FAVORITE room in the house!
It was a pond. Now, it’s a gorgeous pool!
I LOVE the Butler’s Pantry!
In true 1970 style, we make a big pot of Folgers coffee every morning!

We weren’t talented enough to tackle these projects on our own, so here’s our recommendations:

  • Tommy Cisar (He can do most anything. He’s a perfectionist, incredibly nice and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet his dog “Spot”!)
  • Country Cabinets
  • Check back SOON to see more decorating-details!

“The Road Back To You” (My thoughts on the book)

BOOK: “The Road Back To You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery”
AUTHOR: Ian Cron & Suzanne Stabile

DISCLAIMER: I am MAJORLY OBSESSED “intrigued” with learning more about personalities, feelings and motivation behind what we do. Before all of my kids knew how to spell their own middle names, I already had an individual binder for each of them. Inside are journal-entries, funny-stories and God-moments worth remembering. On the OUTSIDE… well, over the years, I’ve jotted down areas where I could envision God using their unique strengths (ie: Rayna: nurse, engineer, mom, chef, etc.). I’ve also made notes regarding their “Love Language,” Spiritual Gifts and Myers Briggs Personality-Types. (Told ‘ya!)

Sooo… it’s very possible I might be a tad-bit more passionate about THIS book than most.

SUMMARY:

Although the Enneagram was originally taken from “a modern synthesis of a number of ancient wisdom traditions,” this (updated and Christian-based) book not only explains the nine different personalities, but how these unique tendencies affect our walk with the Lord, others and ourselves.

Each chapter begins with a story about the Enneagram number it’s about to explain. Within each chapter, there are very helpful subjects, such as:

  • “What’s It Like To Be A…” (20 statements to help a person identify)
  • What it looks like to be a healthy, normal or unhealthy version of this number (In my interruption, it’s also how GOD can use your traits to love others or how selfish desires and lies can draw you away from God and others.)
  • Problems and Strengths of each type
  • This type “As Children,”In Relationships” and “At Work”
  • “Ten Paths to Transformation for…” (each number)

YOU’LL LOVE THIS BOOK IF…

  • You enjoy digging-deep into feelings and thought-patterns.
  • You desire to learn more about yourself (and you’re willing to acknowledge your shortcomings in order to grow).
  • You desire to understand others better- knowing that if you understood their motives, fears or desires, you might gain an understanding of why they do what they do.

QUICK FACTS:
Faith-based? Yes
Easy read? Yes
Age group? ANY!

PERSONAL TAKE-AWAYS:

  • I purchased this book for myself, but ended-up learning SO much about other’s in my life. For example, instead of someone as “rigid,” I now understand that person feels safest when set rules and routines are always in place.
  • For myself (Enneagram 4), I was able to understand my motives for somethings I strive to achieve. (Prior to this book, I would not have recognized it in such a way.)
  • God has given us ALL qualities and gifts. We can be intentional and self-aware where these are used for good. But not knowing can often lead to these ‘gifts’ being turned towards selfish gain.

QUOTES:

  • “…most people aren’t aware of how things that helped them survive as kids are now holding them back as adults.”
  • “Each personality’s deadly sin is like an addictive, involuntarily repeated behavior that we can only be free of when we recognize how often we give it the keys to drive our personality. As long as we are unaware of our deadly sin and the way it lurks around unchallenged in our lives we will remain in bondage to it.”
  • “Ones show us God’s perfection and His desire to restore the world to its original goodness, while Twos witness to God’s unstoppable, selfless giving. Threes remind us about God’s glory, and Fours about the creativity and pathos of God. Fives show God’s omniscience, Sixes God’s steadfast love and loyalty, and Sevens God’s childlike joy and delight in creation. Eights mirror God’s power and intensity, while Nines reflect God’s love of peace and desire for union with his children.”

Discovering the Bible

Honestly, I didn’t like it.
I held this gift in my lap, but I couldn’t help but feel like it wasn’t, at ALL, what I wanted or even needed.

As I looked at the black-and-white pattern and thick, leather exterior, it felt dated and too formal. It certainly didn’t feel like a case a 22-year old girl would use to carry her new Bible in to church on Sunday mornings. Even though I considered returning the gift Matthew had spent so much time looking for, I knew it wasn’t worth hurting his feelings. Besides, I only saw my Bible and it’s cover an hour each week.

I was right.
The next 13 years passed and that outdated Bible cover was rarely seen. Occasionally, it would cross my mind to grab it before heading to church on Sundays. But, the verses were usually displayed on the big screen at the front. And during our weekly Small Groups at our home, I would sometimes plan to look for it. But usually, my focus would quickly shift from my Bible to whether or not our friends would notice if I added cream cheese to my sausage balls to make them more moist for that night’s snack.

But one day, I made a big decision.
Although I grew-up in church, I had never read the Bible for myself. I believed the stories; but, somehow never truly connected with the words inside. So I decided to give-up FALSE GODS ‘overly important things‘ in my life to SLOW DOWN, press RESET in my spiritual walk with the Lord and actually open that unwanted black-and-white case that had been pushed to the side all these years.

But something began to change.
As I began to really read through the pages in my Bible for the first time, my eyes and heart were opened! The Bible became REAL to me. No longer did I look at the pages as outdated, but now, each page felt VERY alive, EXTREMELY relevant and EXACTLY what I needed that day!

One morning as I read my daily reading plan, Rayna joined me at the kitchen table to color. As I watched her bring her own monotone page alive with crayons, I realized how symbolic that transformation was with my Bible cover AND my spiritual life!

Without any hesitation, I quickly found colorful markers and began adding LIFE to what I once considered lifeless.

Full of LIFE!

For too many years, I had (incorrectly) assumed the Bible was like my cover- good, but a bit outdated (…and not what I thought I needed or wanted in my life). In the same way I was given a Bible cover I didn’t appreciate, my actions proved that the Holy book kept inside was also unappreciated and not treasured.

But in the same way my Bible (and cover!) came ALIVE, so did my HEART when I discovered the BIBLE for myself!

Regardless of your history or hold-ups,
I want to CHALLENGE YOU to READ the BIBLE for yourself!

MY FAVORITE TIPS

The BASICS:

* Choose a TIME & PLACE:
For me, if I don’t read my Bible in the morning, it will not get done. (In certain seasons, I’ve had to wake-up early. Other times, I’ve had to be very stern with my kids and tell them, “For the next 30 minutes, I am reading my Bible- which means I am INVISIBLE.” There were times when a child may have ‘needed’ me to open a container or help with something, but unless it was urgent, I simply reminded them I would be free to help AFTER I finished my Bible study.)

I also intentionally choose a spot that faced the outdoors (vs. at a messy living room or sink filled with dirty dishes). If you’re anything like me, sometimes it’s easier to jump into a ‘quick’ task- saying to yourself, “I’ll read my Bible AFTER I…”

Lastly, I really enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea. So, I intentionally set a self-discipline that I will ONLY have my coffee DURING my Bible reading time. This gave me incentive each morning to get started!

* Use your (REAL) Bible:
I’ll explain more how an app helped me in the process. But, I am SOOOOO passionate holding your REAL Bible in your hands… with a pen… and highlighter… and (don’t feel overwhelmed, but) a journal.

* After the Lord speaks to you (through His word), continue the process and use this sacred time to PRAY (and talk to Him) afterwards. I plan on writing more about this soon, but there’s ALSO some great tips that have drastically improved my (at-one-point almost non-existent) prayer life!

Choose a PLAN:
* Reading the Bible in a YEAR is my FAVORITE! I have done this the past four years and I’m constantly AMAZED at how God uses my daily, assigned reading to DIRECTLY speak to EXACTLY what I’m walking through!

* You can simply open your Bible, but I LOVE having a daily guide. Even more than a simple guide, I LOVE having a digital version on my phone. Although I read from my (real) Bible, I’ve downloaded YouVersion’s Bible App. Within that app, you can choose from SO many plans! (My favorite is “Canonical”. Unlike chronological which takes you through the EXACT order each book was written, canonical allows you to read straight through the Bible without having to skip-around from book to book based on the exact order.)

Many apps will allow you invite friends to join you, “catch-up” when you fall behind and even show your progress!

Need ENCOURAGEMENT?

* I would love to say that every minute of every day that you’re reading your Bible is pure bliss. However, you will certainly face seasons when you fall behind, don’t understand certain scripture, aren’t interested or simply distracted. This is NORMAL. Please don’t let the enemy win by getting discouraged, beating yourself up and quitting.

Keep on keeping-on!
If you’re behind, no biggie!
If you don’t understand, don’t beat yourself up!
If you don’t feel like it’s speaking to you, ask God to speak to you in another way.

* Ask a friend to join you!

* Check out THIS SERMON where Pastor Nick says it better than me!

Feel like there’s NO TIME?

* Listen HERE for clear, quick tips on making time (from desiring God)
* I plan to blog about this soon, but INTENTIONALLY SLOW DOWN. Say ‘no’ to busy!

DON’T UNDERSTAND?
* The first time I resolved to read through the Bible, I was so happy to have simply ‘gotten through’ it. Meaning, I probably didn’t retain a lot.

However, I was eager to do it again and, the second time, write out verses that spoke to me.

* The third year, my goal was to actually LEARN! For me, it helped to have a notebook and markers. Each day, I tried to makes notes where I could not only LEARN myself, but also teach my kids about it later. For my learning-style, that meant a LOT of (bad) drawings and illustrations. (I also created some ‘fill-in-the-blank’ formats where I could use it to teach my kids.)

* Lastly, before I start each book of the Bible, I try to take a few minutes (usually when I’m putting on make-up or unloading the dishwasher) to watch the overview video produced by The Bible Project. On YouTube, I simply search the book of the Bible and “Bible Project” and I’ll quickly get a great summery of the book I’m about to dive into.

I PRAY this will help to encourage and equip you to get into God’s Word! It has totally transformed my own life.

If you need a buddy, I plan on starting another 1-year plan this November. I would LOVE to be your Bible-buddy!
